Stena Line Norway AS
Stena Saga, the Terminal and Head
Office (HQ) Oslo, Norway - 2008

Stena Line Norway AS chose Nexus and services provided by ConnectIT AS to upgrade their video networks for the Stena Saga, their Terminal and Headquarters

Stena Line AB is one of the world’s largest ferry companies with a modern fleet of 35 vessels and Europe’s most comprehensive route network consisting of 18 ferry routes in Scandinavia and around the UK . By constantly developing its products and services, Stena Line AB has achieved a strong position with significant market shares on all its market sectors.

Client Overview

Stena Line AB is an international transport and travel service company and one of
the world’s largest ferry operators and are leaders in all their markets. Stena Line’s
strong position results from the combination of strategic company acquisition and
constant service and product development.

Stena Line has three business areas: Scandinavia, the North Sea and the Irish Sea.
Stena Line’s route network consists of 18 strategically located ferry routes. Stena Line
has a modern fleet with a total of 34 vessels including fast ferries (HSS), traditional
combi-ferries, RoPax-ferries for freight and passengers, and pure cargo ships.

Overview

  • The AppSpace platform completely automates the process of updating, running and controlling the entire digital signage network centrally.
  • Utilizing a single PC server and portal license, Stena Saga now has the abilty to play four different Channels at the same time in different areas of the ferry.
  • A total of 12 digital signage displays are located throughout key areas of the terminal.
  • 40” Samsung screens placed at strategic locations in their ferry terminal strengthens their ability to reach their clients as early as possible, with the maximum effect.
  • Stena Line HQ now have a constant and accurate picture of what is going on at their different locations and can change content easily.

The Challenge

Stena Line Norway AS was using a manual system which relied heavily on employees to update and upgrade content onboard the Stena Saga, the ferry going between Norway, Sweden and Denmark. The system consisted of more than 20 screens spread all over the ship playing the same information and had to be serviced by employees onboard the ship whenever they wanted to do an upgrade of content.

In their experience, many of the screens were not effective due to outdated information and content simply not being relevant or good looking.

Stena Line wanted a system that would give them the ability to control the content centrally, either onboard the ship itself or from their headquarters in Oslo. They wanted to remove the employee factor and streamline the process of campaign development, content creation and executing the campaigns and happenings onboard without having to rely solely on human interaction.

In addition to upgrading their system onboard the ferry, Stena Line also wanted to extend their ability to communicate with passengers before they came onboard. They realized that perceived time spent in the ferry terminal, waiting for the ferry to arrive or standing in queue to get onboard, could be reduced drastically by using screens to communicate offers, special deals, happenings onboard and of course giving them a preview of what is to come.

Stena Line headquarters also wanted to have a system set up in their offices to play content from the ship and ferry terminal, and also to promote their own brand and internal information to visitors. Their Marketing department and their Call Centre wanted to see what was playing on the Stena Saga and additionally the Call Centre wanted the ability to integrate their phone system into the Nexus solution.

Key Solution Features

  • The AppSpace platform gives Stena Line the ability to manage all content centrally.
  • The Nexus On-Demand solution lets Stena Line communicate with passengers before they are onboard.
  • Stena Line uses digital signage to communicate offers, special deals, happenings onboard and a preview of what to come.
  • Stena Line HQ also uses digital signage to promote their own brand and internal infomation to visitors.

Customer Testimonial

“Stena saga is only in port for an hour each day. So our challenge was to establish a stable Internet connection to the ship for the duration of its voyage, maintenance of content & system and of course the installation on the ship. We chose ConnectIT AS and Nexus because we were impressed by the level of service, their follow-up and the fact that their software solved our challenges and needs. We are very happy with the results and are looking forward to further develop our usage of Nexus and the possibilities they provide.”
